Michael T. Hartsough
Michael T. Hartsough, 58 of Ewing Twp, NJ passed away on Wednesday at his home surrounded by his family after a long and heroic battle with lung cancer.
Michael was a graduate of Holy Cross High School, Delran (1972), St. Joseph’s University, Philadelphia (1976) and Rutgers School of Law, Camden (1979). Michael enjoyed a distinguished career in law where he served as the law clerk to Judge George Y. Schoch, assignment judge of the New Jersey Superior Court (1979), was an associate at Weston, Kravitz & Rank, Ewing (1980) and was founding partner of several Mercer County law firms including Hartsough, Kenny, Chase & Sullivan, Hamilton from which he retired in 2011.
Mike’s legal expertise involved the areas of real estate, land use and governmental law. During his professional life, he represented many local municipalities and governing bodies including Mercer County, Ewing Township, Hamilton Township, West Windsor Township and Pemberton Township.
Michael served as a trustee on numerous boards including the New Jersey State Building Authority, Mercer County Chamber of Commerce, Mercer County Library Commission and Ewing Chamber of Commerce. He was a member of the Mercer County Republican Committee, Ewing Township Republican Club and served as a Ewing Township Committeeman for over 20 years. He was a past president of Ewing Little League, Lawrence Flames Ice Hockey Club and Ewing High School Ice Hockey Parents Association and was a valued volunteer for the Ewing Roller Hockey Association.
As expressed in hundreds of messages of thanks and appreciation that he received during his recent illness, no listing of his professional accomplishments or civic affiliations can convey the value of the personal service Michael gave to those who requested his help.
Throughout his life, Michael was a passionate and avid runner and over the years helped organize numerous road races throughout Mercer County to benefit local charities. Scuba diving was also a favorite activity and he cherished summers with family and friends at his home in Ocean City, NJ. After receiving his lung cancer diagnosis, the always optimistic Mike put his energy toward cycling and was a proud finisher of a 50 mile Livestrong Ride in the August 2012.
Michael is survived by his loving wife of 36 years, Jane (Kiernan) and his two sons, Matthew and Kyle. He is also survived by his parents, Albert and Mary Ellen Hartsough and siblings Karen (Hartsough) and David Kritz, Steven and Kathy Hartsough and Kurt and Corinne Hartsough and in-laws Joe and Betty Kiernan, Mark and Barbara Kiernan, Annette and Rick Lawlor, Randy and Colleen Kiernan and Mary and Eric Boyle. He is also survived by nieces and nephews: Katie, Sean, Amy, Chelsea, David, Dallas, Dylan, Moira, Katharine, Caroline, Grant, Luke, Pierce and Owen. Michael is pre-deceased by his brother, David.
Relatives and friends are invited to gather on Friday from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. at M. William Murphy Funeral Home at 935 Parkway Avenue, Ewing, NJ 08618. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 12 Noon on Saturday, Sept 21st at Our Lady of Good Counsel Church, 137 W. Upper Ferry Road, W. Trenton, NJ, 08628.
