John G. DeMatteo, Sr.
John G. DeMatteo, Sr. 84, of Flemington NJ passed away peacefully on Sunday December 29, 2013 surrounded by his loving family after a long illness.
Born and raised in Pennington NJ, he graduated from Trenton Catholic Boys High School in 1948.
He served in the United States Army during the Korean War and with the National Guard in Flemington.
John worked for the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) in the Bureau of Maintenance, retiring after 34 years of service.
He owned The Gentry and Calico Junction clothing stores at Turntable Junction in Flemington.
He lived in the Flemington area for over 53 years. John very much enjoyed being with his family members, attending his grandchildren’s sporting events and having gatherings at his home.
Son of the late Vincenzo and Mary (Tabilio) DeMatteo, he is survived by his wife of 61 years, Mary (Parno) DeMatteo; three sons, John G. Jr. (Michele) DeMatteo, Keith (Margaret) DeMatteo and Jeffrey DeMatteo; five grandchildren, Jacqueline, Shannon, Liam, Gregory and Christopher; one sister, Joyce Schragger; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Viewing hours will be held on Sunday, January 5, from 5 - 9 PM and Monday from 9:15 – 10:15AM at the M. William Murphy Funeral Home, 935 Parkway Avenue, Ewing, NJ. Funeral service will be held Monday at 10:15AM.
Interment with military honors will follow at Washington Crossing Veteran’s Cemetery, Washington Crossing, PA.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions in memory of John DeMatteo made to the Whitehouse Rescue Squad, 269 Main Street, PO Box 175, Whitehouse Station, NJ 08889 and/or Hunterdon Hospice, 2100 Westcott Drive, Flemington, NJ 08822.
