Rev. Msgr. William F. Fitzgerald, P.A., J.C.D.
Rev. Msgr. William F. Fitzgerald, P.A., J.C.D., (86) passed away Monday at St. Francis Medical Center, Trenton.
Born in Newark, he was raised in South Amboy, the son of the late Anna and William Fitzgerald. He is survived by his beloved sister, Sister Marian William Fitzgerald, O.S.F.
Msgr. Fitzgerald was educated at St. Charles College, Catonsville MD, St. Mary Seminary, Baltimore and Catholic University of America, Washington DC, from which he received a doctorate in Canon Law.
He was ordained to the Priesthood by the Most Reverend George W. Ahr, Bishop of Trenton, on June 28, 1950. In the course of his long and exemplary service in the Diocese of Trenton, Msgr. Fitzgerald served in several parish ministries. He served as Pastor of St. Joseph Church, Trenton (1967-1973) and Our Lady of Good Counsel Church, West Trenton (1973-2011). He held significant posts of leadership and administration in the Diocese of Trenton as Chancellor as well as Vicar General. Among the many ways he served the people in the Diocese was through his membership on the Board of Trustees of Morris Hall-St. Lawrence Rehabilitation Center, Lawrenceville, and St. Peter’s Hospital, New Brunswick.
On three occasions Msgr. Fitzgerald was recognized by His Holiness, the Pope, for his outstanding contributions to the Church. On October 5, 1963 he was appointed a Papal Chamberlain with the title of Reverend Monsignor; on September 15, 1977 he was promoted to the rank of Prelate of Honor of His Holiness and on December 11, 1983 he was given the rare honor of being named a Protonotary Apostolic.
Throughout his ministry as a Priest, Msgr. Fitzgerald served the people of the Diocese of Trenton with great distinction in his many pastoral and administrative assignments. He was a model of Christian love and commitment.
The Rite of Reception will be on Friday, January 17, 2014 at 2PM at Our Lady of Good Counsel Church, 137 W Upper Ferry RD, West Trenton. Visitation will follow until 7PM when the Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by the Most Reverend David M. O’Connell, C.M., Bishop of Trenton. Interment in St. Mary’s Cemetery, South Amboy, will be Saturday.
