Hilda (Frey) Szmutko
Hilda (Frey) Szmutko, 85, passed away on April 1, 2014 at Princeton Care Center following a long battle with breast cancer and associated complications.
Born at St. Francis Hospital in Trenton, NJ, on April 28, 1928, Hilda lived in Hamilton Township and attended Holmdel School and Kuser School, graduating from Hamilton High School in 1945.
She graduated from Trenton State Teachers College in 1949 and was employed with Chase Aircraft, The Hibbert Company and a number of other firms including Procurement International and International Schools Services, from where she retired in 1989 as Director of Human Resources and Procurement.
In 1951, she married Francis (Frank) Szmutko and celebrated more than 60 years of marriage until he passed away in 2012. They were blessed with wonderful children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, to whom they were deeply devoted. They lived in the City of Trenton following their marriage until moving to Columbus NJ in 2002. They were members of Immaculate Conception Church for many years, where Hilda was involved in PTA, Parish Carnival Committee and student tutoring. In her later years, she also enjoyed an active social life with friends and neighbors.
She was currently a member of Our Lady of Good Counsel Church in West Trenton.
Predeceased by her parents, Carl and Eva (Hartmann) Frey and her aunt, Rosa Heinemann, she is survived by two sons and their wives, Deacon Steven and Mary of Ewing NJ, and Lawrence and Paula of Bartlesville OK; her grandchildren, Emily (Szmutko) Dempster and her husband Joseph Dempster of Mount Penn, PA, Eva Szmutko and Steven Francis Szmutko of Ewing NJ, and Carl Szmutko and Lauren Szmutko of Bartlesville, OK; and three great-grandchildren, Joseph, Cailin and Jakob Francis Dempster.
Calling hours will be held on Friday, April 11 at Our Lady of Good Counsel Church, 137 West Upper Ferry Road, West Trenton, from 9 a.m. until the Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30am. Burial will be in Our Lady of Lourdes Cemetery in Hamilton.
Memorial contributions in her name may be made to the Ewing Public Education Foundation (PO Box 7033, Ewing NJ 08628).
Arrangements are under the direction of the M. William Murphy Funeral Home, 935 Parkway Avenue, Ewing, NJ.
