Luciana Vega went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, January 14, 2015 at St. Joseph Skilled Nursing Center in Lawrenceville NJ, just 6 days after her 92nd birthday on January 8.
Luciana came to this country in 1955 from her native country of Spain. She was born in Galvez, a small town south of Toledo, in 1923 as the only child of Lazaro Linares Maldonado and Adela Lopez Benavente. She lost her mother before the age of 10 and then tragically lost her father during the Spanish Civil War of 1936. She was raised in a convent in Toledo by nuns and taught the domestic trades. She then worked in Madrid as a housekeeper for various influential families. She was the first in her family to venture across the Atlantic to live in Washington DC as part of the household staff of a Spanish diplomatic family. She married Candido Vega Norat in 1956 and was shortly divorced thereafter.
Luciana lived her life fully and with real gusto, and was loved by so many in her life. She enjoyed singing and dancing to Spanish music, as well as cooking and eating good food. She worked hard as a single mother throughout her years in Washington DC, and also resided briefly in Miami FL and later again in Spain. In 2003, she relocated to Trenton to be closer to her only daughter and her grandchildren, whom she adored and who brought joy to her life. For the past 4 years, Luciana was lovingly cared for at St. Joseph Center by all the staff. She will be greatly missed for her smile and late night snack visits.
She is survived by her only daughter Lucy Vega-Sikorski and her husband Charles Sikorski and her beloved grandchildren, Teresa and Joseph Sikorski. She will also be greatly missed by her close friends of many years, Melania Peace of Landover MD and Nirtha Thompson of Winchester VA.
A viewing will be held Thursday, January 22 from 7-9 p.m. at M. William Murphy Funeral Home, 935 Parkway Avenue in Ewing NJ. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. James RC Church in Pennington NJ on Friday, January 23 at 1 p.m., preceded by a viewing at the church at 12 noon, and followed by internment at Ewing Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Luciana’s name may be made to the Staff Appreciation Fund, c/o Morris Hall, 1 Bishops Drive, Lawrenceville NJ 08648-2025
